Just one Podcast for June, but it’s superb! Argonauts of the Western Isles, a classic kayaking book, is being republished in June 2008. The 1989 edition has been hard to get hold of, but Whittles Publishing are releasing a new edition with an extra five chapters.

This is superb writing, classic adventure and kayaking history all in one book. Here I speak to the author and principle argonaut, Robin Lloyd Jones.

Edinburgh Cast Welcome

Hi there, I'm Rick the Taxi Driver; and I want to welcome you to our trial tour cast called Edinburghcast. Com A trial because I am learning and modifying things as I go. Everything is in beta testing nowadays, and this project is no exception. As you may have guessed I am a taxi driver in Edinburgh. Having been one for twenty-seven years (that is, exactly half my life), its time to break out of this mould, and start learning something new. I have bought myself a computer; the thinking being that I really should get into the digital age, before the "pipe and slippers" thing settles in. I thought I could do a journal, or perhaps a web page, but it seems I have started just when there's been an explosion in digital technology. Its got me really interested in the possibilities that this could bring to my life, and its also getting my brain working again after what seems like years of stagnation. Feeling like I have hit the ground running, I need to focus on a way of applying this. Something a bit creative, that gets me out and about as “all this geek stuff makes me quite dizzy”. I looked around for a project- something that would get me grounded. I thought; why don't I start in my own back yard and learn more about my own culture, try looking at the city objectively and get a different perspective than the one I’ve been used to. People from other places tell me that Edinburgh is a very attractive city; some even think its one of the best in the world, and tell me it must be great living here: but growing up in a city and driving about in it all day, you take it for granted. Having learned as a taxi driver to be opinionated, a general know it all (and that's an occupational neccessity in the job, as you would know if you talk to taxi drivers). You do learn quite a lot when driving around and chatting to passengers, without really trying. Always busy trying to make a living as some taxi driver said to me years ago, "the only way to make money at this game is by parking your bum on the seat", so I did, and forgot about my legs. It will be a bit of an uphill struggle to unlearn this habit, but it's essential to have a go and experience everything that Edinburgh has to offer if I want to get the most out of this project. After that I hope to go on and do a bit travelling in Scotland, and perhaps eventually onto Europe if I get lucky. So join me as I experience Edinburgh, share in my learning curve, hopefully not making too much of an fool of myself, as I tryout what I should have tried years ago. Please send me some feedback; all criticisms will be considered, especially if they are constructive! i.e. go easy on me please. This pod cast will start off as a weekly Sunday audio magazine, ( and as I thought getting into photography would do me no harm), it will also have visual content at times! “Talk about a learning curve!” We will  (hopefully in a relaxed manner) learn about the City of Edinburgh, its people, its stories, and the news. Also some music to break things up and keep us in the right groove. Chilling out, as we do a virtual exploration.

Edinburgh is a city with opposing realities, often living within the dual personalities of the Edinburgh folk. The saying about the people of Morningside (which is a well -to-do suburb of Edinburgh), that they are "a' fur coats and nae knickers" comes to mind. This simply means showing the right thing on the outside, and it doesn't matter what's going on underneath. All of which certainly confused me when growing up, and probably still does! Coming myself from a family where outer appearances and inner realities were quite different, which is probably the same the world over; although I think perhaps we invented it here in Edinburgh. Where do you think Robert Louis Stevenson got the idea of Jekyll and Hyde?  In part he got it from the story of Deacon Brodie which is said to epitomize the duality of Edinburgh’s image as a dignified professional city, with a shadowy underworld. The respectable town councillor, who by day was an upright citizen of Edinburgh, and by night used his position to rob those worth robbing. I will tell you the full story of Deacon Brodie in another installment of Edinburgh cast. In the meantime, we should take a break and have another song. This next one is called "Oor Wullies Baldy". Oor wullie is a comic character that I grew up reading in the Sunday papers. It’s a about a wee boy growing up in  a mythical Scotland, having adventures and getting into trouble. A lovable little rogue, kind of a lad. The fact that this song appeals to me, must surely show the darker side of my Edinburgh personality. I found myself having a good laugh at the miserable life that had befallen Wullie in his old age. So please listen to "Oor Wullie’s Baldy" by Dumb Instrument, who are from Glasgow. Have a look at their website at www.dumbinstrument.com , where they have a few more songs to listen to.

Although born and bred here, it is difficult for me to feel Scottish, as in the tourist version. The heather of the mountains, the glens of the clans, the bagpipes and the kilts of the romanticized version of Scottishness, seems to me to reside on the West Coast and in the Highlands of Scotland- and also a small area in front of Edinburgh Castle. For too long Edinburgh has laboured under its façade of the tarnished Scottishness of Sir Walter Scott who almost single-handedly invented the Scottish tourist industry in the early 19th century, (And reinvented the kilt as well). Edinburgh has for a long time attracted bohemians, students, and other transient types, as they come and go. Now, with a fast growing four hundred and thirty thousand population and a booming economy, quite a few people are discovering it’s a great place to work and live, with a more cosmopolitan feel. So, although we will explore the well-trodden tourist routes, we will also try to find what I hope, is the changing, real Edinburgh of today. Join me in this adventure next week; along with a bit of music, and hopefully as we go on, a few discussions. Weekly Tour Podcast from Edinburgh starting 1st January 2006. Audio Video Slideshows.
