Post-F1 Paths - The entrepreneur Hello friends and welcome to Post-F1 Paths, a mini series brought to you by Sidepodcast that tracks some of the options available to drivers once their career in Formula One is over – either by choice or not. Yesterday we talked about drivers who find it hard to cut ties with the sport, but today it’s a group that have turned their attentions to other endeavours – this is the entrepreneur.

F1 drivers live life somewhat in a bubble. They work hard, train hard, drive hard, but spend almost all of their time focused on finding speed – whether it is from improving their own body and skills, or spending time with the team and engineers on patching up the car. The amount of time and effort that goes into a Formula One career cannot be understated, but it can be lacking in the bigger picture, having a view of life outside the paddock. You learn a lot from a career in F1, but it can be hard to translate that to outside interests.

Some do succeed, however, and have managed to put motorsport behind them to focus on building a business in a totally separate walk of life. There are three business options that have appeared to be the most popular amongst former F1 drivers, the first being to open up an airline.

Spending so much time jetsetting around the world must give drivers something of an idea how the airline industry works, and what customers actually want from a trip across the ocean. Niki Lauda quite famously created Lauda Air which he ran for twenty years before selling up to Austrian Airlines. The brand eventually ceased flying in 2013. Thierry Boutsen, an F1 driver in the 1980s, formed a company, Boutsen Aviation, to buy and sell planes, from corporate jets to smaller private aircraft.

Another outlet for the former-racer-turned-businessman is selling cars. Who has more knowledge about a quality automobile than someone who used to race them for a living? Legendary champion Juan Manuel Fangio owned a Mercedes dealership and became a huge ambassador for the brand, eventually being appointed the President of Mercedes-Benz Argentina. British driver Tony Brooks ran a Ford garage for many years.

It’s not just about selling things that already exist, either. Some have the ability to innovate and create products that were never there before. Nelson Piquet Sr, after a successful stint in Formula One, founded the company Autotrac, which pioneered technology that could aid with satellite mapping and tracking on Brazilian freight trucks.

But, perhaps drivers get fed up with the fast pace of life in F1, with the smoke and dust and petrol fumes. That would explain why moving out to the countryside holds such appeal, with Argentinian driver Carlos Reutemann spending his time on a farm, and also embarking on various political endeavours. Jody Schekter’s successful farm produces organic meat for organic burgers that have even been spotted on sale in the Silverstone paddock.

It doesn’t all have to be about business, of course. There’s also the creative side of being an entrepreneur. Many, many drivers write autobiographies about their time in the sport. Most wait until they’ve finished like Mark Webber, but some, including Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, release works whilst they are still driving but have achieved an order of success that would be worth writing about.

Some drivers even turn their talents to more musical pastimes, with Jacques Villeneuve and Jaime Alguersuari releasing albums of a very different nature. Hamilton also dabbles in music as well as books, but has said that his songs are just for his ears only, so perhaps we won’t see an album from the world champion any time soon.

So, although on the surface it doesn’t seem easy to transition out of motorsports to the corporate or creative world, there’s clearly a discipline that allows for F1 drivers to turn their hands to other endeavours. From buying and selling, to farming, to singing, there’s something out there for everyone.

Thanks for listening to this, the second episode of Post-F1 Paths. We have completed two potential second careers for drivers, and have five more still to come. Can you guess what any of them might be? Let me know at sidepodcast.com/contact, and please do send me your feedback about the topics covered so far. I’ll be back tomorrow with the third episode.

Is globalisation over? The future of world trade Recording of the debate at the Battle of Ideas 2017.

Globalisation is the process by which national and regional economies, societies and cultures have become more integrated through global networks of trade, foreign direct investment, transport, telecommunications and immigration. Many argue that globalisation has been an enormous boon to worldwide living standards. However, serious debate has now broken out about whether globalisation is finally grinding to a halt.

What is globalisation, and is it really coming to an end? If its advocates are right to say that it has brought prosperity worldwide, why are so many people against it? Is it possible to have a ‘progressive’ globalisation, shorn of its free-market excesses?

SPEAKERS

Dr Gerard Lyons

Professor Michael Mainelli

]]> 16 Mar 2017 @ 12:04 pm +0000 http://www.darrenreidhistory.co.uk The Artist in American History E.T. by Atari is widely regarded as one of the worst videogames ever created. Based upon the wildly popular film Steven Spielberg, it was made in under six weeks by a single developer working on hardware that was, by 1982 standards, utterly archaic. The Atari 2600, the console on which the game was released, had just 128 bytes of RAM – not 128Kb of Ram, but 128 bytes. Building the game on such notoriously underpowered hardware at such ridiculously short notice was a catastrophe. $20 million had been spent by Atari on acquiring the license, but only a few thousand dollars were invested into the actual development of the game which was shipped in vast numbers. At least four million copies of E.T. were manufactured and though the game was initially a commercial success, selling upwards of one and a half million copies, it left a vast inventory unsold which Atari eventually shipped to a landfill site in Mexico and buried. The burial of hundreds of thousands of unsold E.T. cartridges was bad enough, but the game’s quality was so notoriously poor that the real damage was caused by the copies which were actually sold. The game found its way into a million and a half homes in time for Christmas, 1982 and, in so doing, helped to sour the American public’s taste in videogames, proving that a well-loved brand was no guarantee of quality. E.T., alongside several other notoriously bad Atari 2600 games from that same era, was an advertisement for why people should not want to play videogames and, in 1983, the market for computer games in the United States collapsed. To be sure, Atari was not the only company responsible for the market crash, but it was a massive contributor. By 1985 the value of videogame sales in the United States had declined from several billion dollars to perhaps one hundred million as consumers across the country lost trust and interest in the medium. E.T., for all its hype and initial success, practically destroyed a medium which had been growing massively since its explosion into American homes in the 1970s. E.T. was the anti-Pong. Other than a footnote in pop culture and business history, then, where does all of this leave the notoriously bad E.T? Is it as bad as its reputation would have us believe; is it really the worst videogame ever made? The simple answer to that question is no. In spite of the fact that it was rushed to market and that it is marred by some terrible design choices, Atari’s E.T. possess degree of charm, particularly when its six week production cycle is taken into account. Granted, one must sometimes look deep to uncover it whilst forgiving some pretty significant flaws, as a piece of retro Americana it carries appeal. The gameplay revolves around E.T.’s quest to assemble the phone that will allow him to ‘phone home’. In order to accomplish this, the titular character is able to move around a type low resolution quasi-open world. Players are forced to go in no one particular direction though there is little variety and little to see wherever they do go. As the player explores the world, such as it is, they find themselves chased by government agents, though the real threat faced by players is the game’s extremely buggy nature. The map is littered with pits, wherein the pieces of the phone are to be found, but falling into such craters is as much a matter of chance as it is a matter of design. Once in a pit, players must extend E.T.’s neck to ascend upwards but might well find that they become snared in a pit-loop, immediately falling back into the same hole from which they have emerged. Sometimes these loops can be broken, often they cannot... http://www.darrenreidhistory.co.uk The Artist in American History http://www.darrenreidhistory.co.uk King Falls AM, News, My Last 3 Slices - VP025

Campbell’s Lyta Zod is described as a cadet in Krypton’s military, who has been having a clandestine, forbidden romance with Seg-El. Recommendation of the Week This week's recommendation is the wonderful King Falls AM. King Falls AM is a fictional narrative podcast that centers on a lonely little mountain town's late-night AM talk radio show and its paranormal, peculiar and weird happenings & inhabitants. Each episode of King Falls AM sees big city radio host Sammy Stevens, joined by Ben Arnold his producer, broadcast in the early hours to the inhabitants of King Falls. The town appears on the surface to be a normal, picture post card town, but below the still waters there’s a whole host of mysterious and weird happenings. The show is very tongue in cheek, and though follows a similar format to the hugely successful Welcome to NightVale, is grounded more in reality, but only slightly. The 2 lead characters build up a genuine chemistry and the strong supporting characters add to the overall feel of a living community, even if they are slightly odd. Sammy is the straight guy in all of this, trying to make sense as an outsider on the events that take place, whilst to everyone else is business as normal. I’ve been very impressed by this show - funny, addictive and at times surprisingly moving, my other subscribed to podcasts have had to take a back seat whilst I catch up with the 30 or so episodes so far. King Falls AM can be found on iTunes and other pod catchers. If you give it a listen, please let me know what you think.

Finished season 2 of Peaky Blinders, the BBC made drama about the infamous gang who ruled Birmingham in the early 1900s. can’t wait to watch season 3 And I’ve been binge listening to this weeks recommendation, but more on that later What last 3 slices of entertainment or media have you been consuming recently? Get in touch and let us all know. NEWS The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that martial arts superstar Jackie Chan is set to receive an Honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards on November 12th. Anew trailer has arrived online for director Paolo Sorrentino’s upcoming eight-part TV drama series The Young Pope which stars Jude Law as “the first American Pope” Lenny Belardo, a.k.a. Pius XIII Back in November of last year it was revealed that Kevin Bacon had signed on for a return to the Tremors franchise for a TV adaptation of the cult 1990 horror-comedy, with Bacon also executive producing alongside Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions. Since then we’ve had no further updates on the project, but the actor has now confirmed that the series is moving forward at Amazon Studios. The SUN tabloid is reporting that these are the frontrunners in being cast as the replacement for Daniel Craig as 007: Idris Elba (Luther) Michael Fassbender (The Light Between Oceans), Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6) and Aidan Turner (Poldark) While producer Barbara Broccoli is also keen on Jamie Bell (Fantastic Four) and James Norton (War & Peace). Couple of new movie trailers that look interesting. The first is for Netflix produced scoff Arq. railers Ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next weekend, a poster and trailer have arrived online for the upcoming sci-fi thriller. The film marks the directorial feature length debut for Orphan Black writer Tony Elliott and stars Robbie Amell (The Flash) and Rachael Taylor (Jessica Jones) Arq is set for release on September 16th on Netflix. The second trailer of note is for the Russian superhero movie Guardians And finally it t looks like Syfy’s upcoming Superman prequel pilot has found its female lead, with Deadline reporting that British actress Georgina Campbell (After Hours) is set to play Lyta Zod in Krypton. Franco DeNicola - How to Create A Successful Business Environment Franco DeNicola states:

"Freedom is the basic construct of the Universe. It's the consciousness with which life itself has been created. It's the very nature of who we are. Everything else is a made up concept of structure that is optional."

This statement got us excited. At Wired For Success TV, we most definitely believe that humanity has bought into a construct that is not real, that is limiting and that is gradually going away. Franco generously shares with us exactly how those constructs have been keeping us playing small in every area of our lives - and nowhere more so than in the Business world.

This informative interview blows away the myths of conventional business thinking. It exposes as an untruth, the idea that we have to 'fight' for our market share. Franco works with businesses who see their bottom line becoming healthier as they become more 'aware' of how they may have been constricting and limiting the very life force of their business by following traditional business beliefs.

If you are in business or thinking of setting up in business, we urge you to listen in to Franco's wise words so that you can begin to expand your thinking way beyond just creating a successful business that keeps the wolf from the door, and move into a space where your whole life is expanding and you yourself are becoming more of who you really are.

Confessions of an Economic Hitman John Perkins ' We're More Powerful Than We Think' John Perkins, author of 'Confessions of an Economic Hit Man', 'Hoodwinked' and 'Shape Shifting' joins us to explore ideas of how we can, as individuals, influence the big Corporations to look at a wider perspective than just the 'bottom line' and still be financially successful.

As more and more of us 'wake up' to the knowledge that we are powerful beyond our wildest dreams, we are looking for ways in which to create positive change for humanity and the planet.

John Perkins has created the Dream Change organisation which is dedicated to changing the way modern societies 'dream' the world and shares....

"We are mistakenly taught that the way to business success is through maximizing profits regardless of the social and environmental costs. However, we now know that this has created a failed global economy, one where shockingly, less than 5% of the population (the U.S.) consumes nearly 30% of the resources, while billions live in abject poverty. This is not only an unfair system, it is not conducive to a sustainable world for future generations."

We discuss with John how it is entirely possible for us to come together and not only envision but create a future that is environmentally sustainable, is spiritually fulfilling and allows social justice for everyone.

If you only know John Perkins from 'Confessions of an Economic Hit Man' (as we did - and what a great and enlightening read it is!) then you are in for a real treat as John Perkins reveals the the reasons and passion for his new project forward. be ready to be inspired to join in with this new era of 'Conscious Business'.
