Millennials: youthquake or snowflakes? Listen to the debate at the Battle of Ideas 2017 at the Barbican in London.

Whereas earlier generations of young people provoked outrage among their elders, millennials – those born in the late 1990s and early 2000s – seem to attract merely condescension and concern. Today’s youth have been labelled ‘Generation Snowflake’ for their declarations of emotional vulnerability and demands for protection and support.

Instead of revolting, today’s students seem to be preoccupied with difficulties in negotiating personal relationships, demanding formal instruction and regulation of issues of consent and protection of apparently fragile identities against hostile criticism. Yet, for those coming of age in an era of austerity and debt, Brexit and Trump, anxiety and apprehension may be appropriate responses. And, in their embrace of issues of social justice, and support for the kinder, gentler form of politics espoused by Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders, perhaps the millennials are pointing the way towards real change in society.

Are the adults of tomorrow over-anxious snowflakes masquerading as a youthquake? Or is their pursuit of a different sort of politics – putting emotion and morality before ideology and policy – exactly the kind of shake up Western politics has been waiting for?

postgraduate officer, University of Lincoln Students' Union; co-editor, Bright Green

Jennie Bristow
senior lecturer in sociology, Canterbury Christ Church University; author, The Sociology of Generations: New directions and challenges and Baby Boomers and Generational Conflict

A good time was had by all, but no ice creams! A North Korean soldier defected to the south under a hail of bullets, but what was really strange is what was found in his gut that made treating him so difficult. Tom got embroiled in a Twitter argument on Friday about a potential terror attack in London that raises some interesting questions about social justice warriors and when a rumour becomes news. Ant reads some nominations from the Bad Sex in Fiction shortlist, which includes some \'interesting\' descriptions of appendages and actions. Liz Taylorson, the wife of #PodPal Ben (Rated H), has had her first novel published. Go buy it through our amazon banner, it\'s called The Little Church by the Sea and costs £1.99. Perfect for a quick Christmas read. Also, check out our other network mates on #Podpals, #BritPodScene and Abnormal Entertainment. Enjoy! Looking healthy is vital to an attractive appearance. But how do we judge a person's healthiness? We find out how face shape and colour influence our perceptions of health, and revisit the idea of limbal rings: a part of the eye that gives away our health and age.

Censorship and identity: free speech for me, but not for you How should free speech activists respond to the challenge of identity politics? It no longer seems sufficient to cite the First Amendment, quote JS Mill, or cry academic freedom in trying to thwart assaults on free expression. There was a powerful illustration of this problem recently when protesters affiliated with Black Lives Matter gatecrashed an event at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia and prevented the invited guest from the American Civil Liberties Union from speaking, chanting ‘the revolution will not uphold the Constitution’ and ‘liberalism is white supremacy’.

Is it time for civil libertarians to adjust their priorities, to ensure that people with ‘protected characteristics’ are given ‘particular respect’, and their views given a veto on what they deem as hate speech? Are those who argue for free speech – no ifs, no buts – too often providing the privileged with a licence to talk over the marginalised, even to incite bigotry? Or is identity politics the new tool of censorship and, if so, how should we respond?

BONUS: The Evolutionary Psychology of Mate Preference. 18 Jul 2017

Earlier this year I posted a bonus episode featuring contributions from students in my undergraduate seminar here at Basel University. It proved to be one of the more popular episodes of the podcast. This semester I taught a masters level class on the evolutionary psychology of mate preference and, again, gave the students the task of summarising the research papers they found most interesting for a special bonus episode. As before, most of the students are not native English speakers, nor have they recorded audio before. I am super grateful they agreed to be a part of the podcast (especially after I freaked them out by telling them how many people listened to the previous bonus episode!).

Outriders http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02pcb15 Confessions of an Economic Hitman John Perkins ' We're More Powerful Than We Think' John Perkins, author of 'Confessions of an Economic Hit Man', 'Hoodwinked' and 'Shape Shifting' joins us to explore ideas of how we can, as individuals, influence the big Corporations to look at a wider perspective than just the 'bottom line' and still be financially successful.

As more and more of us 'wake up' to the knowledge that we are powerful beyond our wildest dreams, we are looking for ways in which to create positive change for humanity and the planet.

John Perkins has created the Dream Change organisation which is dedicated to changing the way modern societies 'dream' the world and shares....

"We are mistakenly taught that the way to business success is through maximizing profits regardless of the social and environmental costs. However, we now know that this has created a failed global economy, one where shockingly, less than 5% of the population (the U.S.) consumes nearly 30% of the resources, while billions live in abject poverty. This is not only an unfair system, it is not conducive to a sustainable world for future generations."

We discuss with John how it is entirely possible for us to come together and not only envision but create a future that is environmentally sustainable, is spiritually fulfilling and allows social justice for everyone.

If you only know John Perkins from 'Confessions of an Economic Hit Man' (as we did - and what a great and enlightening read it is!) then you are in for a real treat as John Perkins reveals the the reasons and passion for his new project forward.   be ready to be inspired to join in with this new era of 'Conscious Business'.

Enjoying Your Social Media Episode 23 Interview: Mayor of Bexhill

Mrs. Frances Winterborn

This is an interview recorded for the Bexhillian Magazine, for which we provide all of the artwork and design for and are very proud to be part of. The interview with Mrs. Frances Winterborn was a very informal and friendly chat about her new appointment as Mayor of Bexhill and what her plans were for the town of Bexhill. She talks about her charity ‘Caring Community‘ and the way in which it helps the residents and the services available. We also talk about the variety show that Frances is organising for her celebration of being appointed for another year.

On a personal note, I found her to be a very friendly and passionate person who is determined to do as much as she can for her community. I for one will be keeping in touch with her and sharing regular updates about events for her charity and the variety show. All of which will appear in the monthly issues of the Bexhillian Magazine.

Please forgive the poor sound quality as it was informal, as mentioned first off, so there are some background noises, but the interview is a very interesting listen, so enjoy and please feel free to leave your comments at the bottom of this post or in our Facebook group.

Firstly in this podcast we have huge thank you's for mentions and shout outs on Twitter and in podcasts. Our special thanks to Richard Barnes and Angry Britain, who we are both huge fans of, kindly mentioned Paul on his birthday after me requesting if they could do it. You are both very kind. These guys are most definitely worth following and subscribing to for their daily conversations, comments and info that they share. A last minute addition to the cast, we just found out it is Richard Barnes birthday tomorrow so, have a great day Richard, we are going to return the favour, many happy returns

Here are their twitter usernames: @RichardBarnes1 and @AngryBritain

We also discuss the new Facebook functions within the app and on the website itself. Pages Feed is the new facility on the website and we discuss whether businesses like this or not, do you? What are your thoughts about splitting the way you see your timeline? Also it's great to finally be able to share content from the Facebook app and to tag your friends in on posts. How long has this taken? Ages! What do you think of this?

Pinterest business pages! Yes you can have a business presence within Pinterest by using a board just for your business for promotion or sharing work or products, etc. But, now you can have a specific business page. Unfortunately Pinterest have said that the verification isn't up to the same level as Twitter but as they say, it's a start. Also we talk about the ‘secret boards' that are now available on Pinterest. What do you think about these? Please comment below when you have time. There are many great reasons for ‘secret boards' that we talk about but we'd love to know why you would use them please.

If you have been listening to us for a while you'll know that we are massive fans of Google +, we talk about refining searches within Google+ and Paul talks about the greatness of GMail and how you can gather contact details within it from your contacts other social media spaces. It's a great use of social media and ease of communication, simply brilliant Mr. Google.

Today we discuss websites, marketing and the process of creating the website using our own site and thoughts as an example. We start by talking about mapping the site pages, determining which pages you need and how you want them to perform. We also talk about how to create content, what is key and that the supply of the all important content is vital to the timescale for web developers. Here is our link to a helpful checklist if you're thinking of creating or having a website built for you. Our checklist is developed from content originally supplied by heartinternet, our UK hosts.

We talk about hosting content yourself online and how important it is to keep backup copies on your hard drive. This extends to social media sharing of pictures and especially larger files such as video, in case of emergencies or your profile being removed against your wishes. We then reiterated how important blogging is in marketing your site and the subsequent social sharing of your blogs to generate traffic to your site. Social sharing plugins, if your website is to be built in WordPress should be researched as we did for ours, as we say on this podcast, plugins are great but they aren't all good, so do your homework and find out what works best for you and the performance of your website. We use Sharexy because it works exactly how we want it to and is super efficient. The more social sharing of your content you do, the more exposure it will give to your business. Always check in whichever statistics programme you are running, that the key phrasing is working for you, which pages are being visited most and why, where are they from and how long did they stay? There are many other reasons for using statistics analysis but do allow time weekly to update content and keep it fresh for search engines. If you are running analytics or tracking, remember the EU Cookie law and your responsibilities to this.

MediaBeetlesUK Marketing, we're happy to say, has been entered in the heartinternet ‘Website of the Month' competition! We're really hoping our listeners and visitors to the site will vote for us as it would really mean a lot to us. You can find the link here and you can vote for us simply by clicking on our site within that page.

This Saturday coming, 27th is the Regional Showcase Final of OpenMicUK as well so I've been sending out press releases and promoting as much as I can to generate interest in my quest to further my singing career. I was lucky enough to have an article printed in the Hastings and Battle Observer this week talking about my Xfactor audition and marriage proposal one year on and how I've been successful in other local competitions. It talks about OpenMicUK and the opportunities it could lead to. Not only that but a lovely photo of my fiancé and I! If you can the final, it's being held at Hove, Brighton, in the Great hall and tickets are £8. It's a 90 minute show and will be an excellent night for real talent and music. Fingers crossed I go through to the next stage.

My next gig is at The Coach and Horses, in Lyminge, Kent on December 15th, so please join us for what will be a friendly night of fun and music. I start at 9pm and carry on until 11pm so get your dancing shoes on!
